Why does Speke have one of the lowest UK driving test pass rates?
No matter where you live, your driving test result boils down to a simple pass or fail on an individual basis. You could live in a high percentage pass rate town and get an unfortunate fail and vice versa.
However, there’s no doubt that some areas seem to attract a higher fail rate than others, and Speke in Liverpool is one of them.
Recent figures show that Speke comes out third highest in the driving test fail tables, with two Birmingham locations just above. In contrast, the top pass places are tiny villages and islands dotted around the West Coast of Scotland.
The driving and vehicle standards agency released an article in July 2019 pointing out the most common reasons for not passing driving test over the previous year. They said that not looking properly at junctions and failing to use mirrors enough remained the most common errors.
This makes it more understandable why Speke is sitting at a 32% pass rate while the Argyll & Bute town of Inveraray soars at nearly 85%. Anyone who has visited Inveraray, Gairloch or Mallaig will know that there are considerably fewer junctions to contend with than in Speke, not to mention a distinct lack of dual carriageways!
Speke, in contrast, is heavily built up with an abundance of A roads criss-crossing it, the M62 to its north and a major airport in the south, making it an incredibly busy place with heavy traffic. Learning to drive and getting a first-time pass in this area is going to present challenges.
So, save from moving to the Highlands and Islands of Scotland to stand a better chance of passing your test, what can you do to improve your chances of a pass in your home city?
The answer lies with top quality lessons and learning to drive at a sensible pace. Vehicle handling is just one aspect of learning to drive in such a busy location. Taking on heavy traffic, complicated junctions and roundabouts, and busy multi-lane roads is a lot to deal with, so several lessons and lots of practice are probably going to be essential. You will also need a competent, honest instructor who is going to be realistic about when you should book your test. It’s better to hold off and have a couple more lessons than rush into a test and have a fail dent your confidence.
